We're a world-renowned research centre that has helped to found, shape and develop the field of 18th-century studies. Our innovative research and research-led teaching fosters a vibrant and collaborative academic environment. This is made up of a strong and welcoming community of scholars and postgraduate students, as well as a vast global alumni network. Interdisciplinary expertise

We work across the University, including in the Departments of Archaeology, English and Related Literature, History and History of Art. The Centre's broad range of disciplines is distinctive among centres of its kind.

Historic and established

We are the only physical centre for 18th century studies in the UK. Our bespoke Masters course was created in 1994.

Our facilities

We're located in Heslington Hall, a beautiful Grade II listed building on Campus West. It's home to a collection of 18th-century art, staff offices, social spaces, seminar rooms and workrooms for our postgraduate researchers. It's also the research hub for the Faculty of Arts and Humanities.

York is rich in Georgian heritage, making it an ideal place to study the 18th century. Its archives and historic buildings connect the city and region to a global conversation about the 18th century. We're also close to the British Library site in Boston Spa.
