Celebrating Excellence: Tony Culyer Receives LSE Brian Abel-Smith Lifetime Achievement Award

We are absolutely thrilled to share some fantastic news.  Our very own Tony Culyer, Emeritus Professor in the Department of Economics and Related Studies (DERS), has been honoured with the prestigious LSE Brian Abel-Smith Lifetime Achievement Award.

This award recognises Tony’s monumental contributions to the field of health economics.

A Legacy of Leadership

For those who might be newer to the department, Tony is a true pillar of our community. His leadership helped shape the foundations of what we do today:

  • Head of Department (DERS): 1986-2001
  • Pro Vice-Chancellor: 1991-93
  • Deputy Vice-Chancellor: 1994-1997
  • Continued Impact: While he is an Emeritus Professor here at DERS, he remains an active and vital presence through his close links with the Centre for Health Economics (CHE).

LSE Health’s Lifetime Achievement Award is reserved for individuals whose work has fundamentally shifted how we understand health policy and equity. Tony’s influence spans decades, and his dedication to rigorous economic analysis in healthcare has impacted systems globally.

"Tony has been a mentor, a leader, and a trailblazer. Seeing his career-long dedication recognised by LSE Health is a proud moment for all of us who have worked alongside him."

Please join us in sending a huge congratulations to Tony on this well-deserved milestone! It’s wonderful to see such a storied career celebrated with this level of distinction.

Cheers, Tony!
