CRD has played a leading role in the development of a new course on Health Technology Assessment for the British Oncology Pharmacy Association (BOPA).

The continuing professional development course, now launched by BOPA, was developed by the University of York's Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Team, of which CRD is a central part. It was developed in collaboration with the National Institute for Health Care and Excellence (NICE).

The course consists of eight e-learning modules and is designed to equip cancer pharmacy professionals across the UK with the knowledge and skills to critically appraise evidence, understand HTA frameworks, and contribute confidently to national and local medicines decision-making.

As cancer treatments become increasingly complex and innovative, the course addresses a growing need for pharmacy staff to engage meaningfully with medicines evaluation processes. It aims to build capability across the workforce and empower professionals to play a stronger role in shaping the future of cancer care.

BOPA welcomed the launch warmly, noting that the course represents an important step forward for the profession:

"We are extremely grateful to the HTA team at the University of York and Steve Williamson (NICE), who have worked hard to develop this programme. Their efforts will help ensure that pharmacy professionals across the UK are better supported to navigate HTA processes and advocate for safe, effective, and equitable access to cancer medicines for patients."

Professor Sofia Dias, Professor of Evidence Synthesis and HTA at CRD and Director of the York Technology Assessment Group, reflected on the significance of the initiative:

"The Technology Assessment Group at the University of York is delighted to share its insights into how HTA is operationalised in the UK. We believe it is important that all healthcare professionals involved in cancer care in the NHS are familiar with the reimbursement process. We see BOPA as pioneers in this regard and we hope that BOPA members will embrace and enjoy this CPD course on HTA."

The course reflects CRD's longstanding commitment to knowledge mobilisation, translating research evidence and expertise into practical resources that support health professionals and decision-makers.
