Case studies: participants and ambassadors

Kaitlyn Atkinson: “Inspired-to-inspiring”

Kaitlyn Atkinson, now a Project Manager at Information Technology Systems, first encountered Children Challenging Industry (CCI) as a primary school pupil. A memorable CCI classroom challenge, packaging an egg on a budget, sparked her early interest in STEM and taught her that there’s often more than one solution to a problem.

That early experience formed part of Kaitlyn’s inspiration to pursue a STEM career via an apprenticeship. Today, she’s a dedicated CCI ambassador, bringing real-world STEM relevance into classrooms and encouraging children to explore science and engineering through hands-on learning.

Kaitlyn values CCI’s role-based activities, which introduce pupils to industry roles while promoting teamwork and problem-solving. One of her most successful CCI sessions involves designing an electronic sensor that turns a light on when a vessel is full of water; an engaging way for students to apply STEM principles creatively.

Trained by advisory teachers in the CIEC team, Kaitlyn is well-prepared to engage young learners. Her key advice: give children time and space to work through challenges independently, as it builds confidence and resilience.

Kaitlyn’s journey from CCI participant to STEM professional highlights the long-term impact of early, practical STEM education and the power of relatable role models in inspiring future innovators.

Rebecca Robinson: Inspiring future scientists

Growing up in Teesside, Rebecca discovered a love for science thanks to hands-on experiments led by a visiting teacher and eye-opening visits to local industries. These experiences made science feel relevant, exciting, and accessible—and showed her the potential for a secure, rewarding career close to home.

Today, Rebecca ensures the safety and quality of pharmaceutical products. Her early exposure to science, and seeing a woman lead those sessions, helped challenge stereotypes and inspired her STEM journey.

Since 2018, Rebecca has been a committed ambassador for the Children Challenging Industry (CCI) programme. Whether demonstrating viscosity experiments or giving site tours, she helps local primary pupils see science in action and imagine themselves in similar roles. A highlight? Being asked if she earns more than a footballer!

Making STEM accessible and fun

Through CIEC training, Rebecca learned how to explain technical concepts using familiar language, like describing "consumables" as "ingredients." Around 90 children visit the Fujifilm site each year, donning lab coats and giggling through glove challenges, while gaining a first-hand glimpse of real-world science.

Being involved in CCI reinvigorates Rebecca’s passion for the industry and reminds her of the importance of outreach.

I’m grateful to work for a company like Fujifilm, and alongside an organisation like CIEC, who share my passion for investing in the next generation by creating opportunities for local school children.
