Jon Agirre of the Department of Chemistry was unanimously voted in as the next Editor-in-Chief of the International Union of Crystallography (IUCr) journal portfolio, succeeding Andrew Allen (NIST, USA).

The Editor-in-Chief provides overall editorial leadership for the IUCr Journals, a portfolio comprising 10 internationally recognised, peer-reviewed journals covering every major area of crystallography and structural science. This prestigious appointment was announced after ratification by the IUCr General Assembly at the 27TH IUCr Congress in Calgary (Canada).

Jon Agirres appointment follows a sustained editorial trajectory with IUCr Journals. His involvement with Acta Crystallographica Section F: Structural Biology Communications began in 2018, when he guest-edited a special issue on glycoproteins and protein–carbohydrate complexes, following which he became a Co-Editor (2019), then a Section Editor (2023).

Jon has helped shape the evolution of Structural Biology Communications, including through initiatives that extend the journals role beyond conventional publishing practices. He helped to develop the journals Interviews with Authors initiative, offering researchers an additional platform to discuss their work and the experiences behind their publications;  the videos are part of the IUCr's YouTube channel. More recently, he spearheaded the introduction of a new Protocols article category, designed to promote detailed and reproducible descriptions of structural biology workflows, with an inaugural article devoted to Cryo-EM methods.
