Health economist Beth Woods has been promoted to professor at CHE, recognising her influential research at the intersection of economics and health policy.

The Centre for Health Economics (CHE) at the University of York is delighted to announce that Beth Woods has been appointed professor.

Professor Mark Sculpher, Head of Department for CHE said: “I am delighted with Beth’s promotion to professor, which is much deserved.  Beth is one of the most innovative and insightful researchers working at the interface of policy analysis and economics. This award recognises the enormous potential impact of her future research as well as her significant contributions to date.”

Career and contributions

Professor Woods has been based at the Centre for Health Economics (CHE) since 2014 and is a member of the Centre for Health Economics’ Economic Evaluation research theme. She has also recently become co-director of the NIHR Policy Research Unit: Economic Methods of Evaluation of Health and Care Interventions (EEPRU).

She holds a BA (Hons) in Economics from the University of Cambridge, an MSc in Economic Evaluation in Healthcare from City University and a PhD in Health Sciences from the University of York.

Before joining CHE, Professor Woods was a Director in the Health Economics team at Oxford Outcomes, a private consulting firm, where she specialised in applied economic evaluation from 2006 to 2013.

She has worked on economic evaluations of a range of health technologies, applying advanced statistical and decision-modelling methods. She has also contributed to methodological research on model structuring in oncology, pharmaceutical pricing policy, and the evaluation and pricing of technologies to address antimicrobial resistance.

Professor Woods is also a member of the NIHR Health Technology Assessment Clinical Evaluation and Trials Board and sits on the Board of Directors of York Health Economics Consortium.

Medicines pricing

Within EEPRU, Professor Woods leads the medicines pricing research theme.

Her work has important implications for health policy, examining how the value created by medicines is shared between manufacturers and NHS patients.

Her research also explores how the prices paid by health systems can balance access to medicines for patients today, health care costs and the need to incentivise future research and development. Danny Palnoch (Head of Medicines Analysis, NHS England) described this work as “truly ground breaking in my view, and should inform developments going forward.”
