Film and television at York

Film and television at York delivers creative courses at the forefront of a rapidly evolving art form. We help cultivate our students’ practical, theoretical and analytical skills to let their imaginations flourish.

We’re a collaborative community of technicians and storytellers. We're a research-intensive school, combining theory and practice in our teaching. Our staff are experienced and award-winning teachers and creative practitioners well-versed in the history of television and cinema. Our students can refine their professionals skills in exceptional facilities, creating their own dramas, documentaries and studio programmes. We encourage students to build their portfolio and enhance their employability with guest masterclasses and our extensive industry links. We also encourage work placements, and students have undertaken internships and traineeships in British film and television, with broadcasters including the BBC and ITV, and independent production companies.

Accreditation

Many of our courses are accredited by Screenskills, the industry-led skills body for the UK's screen-based industries. This means our curriculum is approved and supported by the industry. 

The School is part of the BAFTA albert Education Partnership. albert is the leading screen industry organisation for environmental sustainability. Through this partnership students are introduced to the sustainability knowledge they'll need when joining the production workforce.

Film and television courses combine theory and practice. They give our students everything they need to bring bold, original stories to life on screen.

Our facilities include three professional HD television studios, theatre stages, post-production suites and a 140-seat 4K digital cinema with surround sound.

Our research

Our staff are active practitioners with wide-ranging expertise. Their experience informs their research and teaching, so our students benefit from relevant insights and contemporary ideas.

We've researched working conditions in the screen industries; global production contexts; equality, diversity and inclusion challenges for the creative industries; business models in film; fair work; skills and training; cultural consumption; and funding for arts and culture.
