Film and television at York

Film and television at York is a thriving hub for innovation, industry engagement and research, which advances creative production, critical analysis and strategic partnerships that contribute to our rapidly evolving art forms and screen cultures.

Rooted in both artistic practice and scholarly inquiry, we explore the past, present and future of moving-image media across cinema, broadcast and digital platforms. Our academic community includes internationally recognised creative practitioners and researchers whose work as directors, screenwriters, producers, cinematographers, sound specialists and editors, intersects with cultural, industrial and technological developments in film and television.

York’s distinctive approach fosters collaborations that advance knowledge, influence practice and engage diverse audiences and our staff’s range of strengths in practice- and research-led activity reflect the School’s broader mission to lead in creative and cultural innovation through informed and relevant changes experienced across our industries.

Accreditation and Partnerships


This course is industry recognised by ScreenSkills, the industry-led skills body for the UK's screen-based industries, and carries the ScreenSkills Select quality-mark which indicates courses best suited to prepare students for a career in the screen industries. The accreditation means that our students learn professional skills on courses approved and supported by the industry; and it gives access to various schemes, eg internships and traineeships with the BBC, ITV and other broadcasters, as well as independent production companies in British film and television.

The School of Arts and Creative Technologies is part of the BAFTA albert Education Partnership. albert is the leading screen industry organisation for environmental sustainability. Through this partnership students are introduced to the sustainability knowledge they'll need when joining the production workforce.

The School of Arts and Creative Technologies works in partnership with the Mark Milsome Foundation to support the highest standards of safety in film and television production. Through this partnership, all students complete the Mark Milsome Foundation Film and TV Online Safety Passport, ensuring they develop essential health and safety awareness before entering any educational or professional production environment.

Our facilities include three professional HD television studios, theatre stages, post-production suites and a 140-seat 4K digital cinema with surround sound.

Our research

Our research in film and television contributes to contemporary debates around screen culture, narrative forms, media industries and audience dynamics. Across individual and collaborative projects, staff and affiliated researchers publish widely and engage with international forums, festivals and academic networks. Research expertise at York has informed partnerships with industry and shaped approaches to media production and reception, underlining our role as a centre for research excellence that resonates well beyond the University.
