As composers and performers, we often work hard to ensure that our expressive and creative intentions are effectively shared with our audience. Should audiences be expected to put in similar effort? Is a well-informed listener preferred to a novice?
This session will open up discussion around the pros and cons of a knowledgeable audience, covering (but not limited to) ideas around familiarity, social and political context, spontaneity, accessibility, and personal interpretation.
Some questions that might be covered include:
- How, as a composer, do you make your intentions clear, without limiting the listener's personal interpretation?
- How much value do you afford to extra-musical means of sharing information about your music (such as programme notes)?
- Are there certain genres or styles of music where the composer's intentions are more important than others?
- How can composers and performers address the challenge of communicating their intentions to a diverse and varied audience?
