Newness remains a criterion for PhD research in arts practice, and research assessment processes for those employed in higher education have also put an emphasis on innovation in practice as research. Points of discussion may be:
1) What does it mean to make 'new' work?
2) Is newness a cultural variable?
3) Is the cult of innovation a spur to creativity or a hindrance?
