Event details

Hearing Dogs for Deaf People are delighted to come to York University, to give an opportunity for students to meet Hearing Dogs and their handlers, and learn more about the charity. Hopefully this will also bring light relief from revision and exams! There’s nothing like a wet nose and waggy tail to de-stress!

Hearing Dogs for Deaf People have two training centres in England, one in North Yorkshire, just outside Pocklington, the other in Buckinghamshire. Hearing Dogs not only alert deaf people to important and life-saving sounds, such as smoke alarms, doorbells, and oven timers, they also provide lots of love, companionship and emotional support to their deaf partners, helping them to leave loneliness behind. There are over 1200 Hearing Dog partnerships in the country, and it is hoped to train another 200 dogs this year. However, the charity needs more volunteers to come forward to home the dogs while they are in training. If you are interested, visit the Hearing Dog website or contact them directly on volunteer@hearingdogs.org.uk or 01844 348129.

The event will be free and you can choose from the first slot starting at 14:00 for 45 minutes or the second slot starting at 15:00 for 45 minutes.

Richard Cantrell is a Volunteer Dog Trainer and Speaker for the charity, and he will be explaining how the dogs are trained, and showing what an amazing difference they can make to the lives of deaf people, helping them to reconnect with life. He will be joined by seven dogs, at various stages of their training, including some deaf partnerships.
