Ibsen’s classic play is often staged as a tragedy of hypocrisy, with secrets and lies emerging as the action unfolds. This new production invites the audience to see the play in a different light.
Ghosts, written in 1881, tells the story of Mrs Alving’s reckoning with the past and how the sins of her late, dissolute, but much-respected husband have been visited on her son, Osvald. She contemplates her own role in his decline and finds herself having to face some tough questions.
But what if she isn’t solely to blame? What is the role of Pastor Manders, her friend and priest? What roles are they playing in a straight-laced Victorian society and have they chosen the right ones? This fresh interpretation asks why people behave in ways that lead to disaster and offers spectators a critical and satirical view of the players. Might we have mistaken a dark comedy for a tragedy for over a century?
