ALL WELCOME

In this session, Danny and Fin will present JustTune, a web app for playing and viewing the harmonic series. Based on an original app by Martin Suckling, this version uses a piano keyboard to select a fundamental, with numbers to hear the natural harmonics above it.

Try it here: https://dannysaleeb.github.io/JustTune/

The app allows switching between equal temperament (12-EDO) and just intonation (JI), with chosen notes appearing on the stave. We will discuss the tool's design, from audio to notation, and its potential for further development. JustTune was commissioned by Clement Power, with funding from the mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, who will be joining us online.

About the speakers

Fintan O'Hare is a composer and PhD student at the University of York. His research involves making DIY instruments from motors and found objects, and computationally deriving musical material from aspects of speech.

Daniel Saleeb is a British musician born in 1985. He is a PhD student at the University of York researching analogy-making in composition, supervised by Martin Suckling and Federico Reuben and supported by the White Rose College of the Arts & Humanities. His work explores the tension between computational and intuitive modes of composing, and he makes eclectic work across wide-ranging performance contexts, often working with extramusical media and drawing on disparate musical styles.
