In many of our contemporary music research seminars in recent years, the question of the musician’s ‘voice’ has arisen: what we might mean by a composer’s or performer’s ‘voice’; whether it resides somehow ‘in’ their work or not, and either way quite how it might manifest, develop and change; whether it is recognised from within or without; and whether it is a useful concept at all. Our discussion sessions on February 17th and 24th will focus on this topic. For this second session, Loré Lixenberg and Catherine Laws will provide some starting points for an open discussion.
