This session will demonstrate electronic and acousmatic compositional work that has engaged with space as the primary parameter of interest. This work has developed from research into the compositional affordances and peculiarities of the in-ear binaural method of recording, into more recent work that harnesses large-array dynamic convolution processing to exploit both binaural and ambisonic impulse responses to produce potentially complex spatial images from arbitrary signals. Ongoing research into the authoring and creative use of complex abstract and abstracted spatial images will be demonstrated, alongside a selection of binaural and ambisonic work.
About the speaker
Matt Barnard
Matt Barnard is a researcher and practitioner engaged with electronic composition, recording and production. Current research revolves around spatial audio techniques and creative applications. He recently joined the University of York in August, having previously been director of the Hull ElectroAcoustic Research Organisation at the University of Hull.
