Arts and Humanities at York ranks 62nd in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings by subject, 2026

We have been ranked 62nd in the world and 10th in the Russell Group for the study of Arts and Humanities in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by subject. The ranking recognises the quality of our courses, and the experiences and opportunities they provide to our students.
Our Head of the Department of Archaeology, Professor Stephanie Wynne-Jones said: “It’s wonderful to see York doing so well in this prestigious ranking, with all the incredible research and teaching in the Arts and Humanities recognised across the globe. We in Archaeology are proud to be a part of such a wonderful and high-achieving faculty.”
The Times Higher Education World University Rankings by subject are published annually to help students choose a university course. It ranks universities by subject area in metrics including teaching, research environment, research quality, industry and international outlook.
York’s overall position
York has been ranked in the top 150 for six subjects in the THE World University Rankings by Subject 2026.
- Arts and Humanities: 62nd (12th in the UK)
- Business and Economics: 101–125 (15th in the UK)
- Medical and Health: 101–125 (17th in the UK)
- Education Studies: 101–125 (14th in the UK)
- Psychology: =77 (10th in the UK)
- Social Sciences: 126–150 (22nd in the UK)
