Phd topic title: Biodiversity gains in churchyards as a microcosm for UK biodiversity gains
PhD supervisor(s): Colin Beale, Victoria Wells, Kate Giles and Julie Rugg
Biography and research
My research project investigates the biodiversity value of various churchyards, and the potential of sustainable churchyard management. Alongside this, an important part of my research is engaging with stakeholders to establish the perceptions and values of communities, and to understand the challenges associated with realising biodiversity gains within churchyards. The aim of the project is to find clear strategies to engage and positively involve communities in wider biodiversity promotion.
I completed my BSc in Zoology and MSc in Species Identification and Survey Skills (SISS) at the University of Reading. My interest in churchyards specifically came from working as a Funeral Service Operative, which led to me spending a lot of time in various churchyards. Once I graduated with my MSc, I worked as an Assistant Ecologist, carrying out protected species surveys, managing projects, and providing advice to clients on how to complete their developments whilst also maintaining and safeguarding biodiversity.
