PhD topic title: Re-imagining the Waters: rewilding opportunities and sustainable harvest in Haweswater and Ullswater
PhD supervisor(s): Jon Pitchford, Brennen Fagan, Harrie Neal, Mo Verhoeven (RSPB)

Biography and research

My research project focuses on the history of the fisheries at Ullswater, using ecosystem modelling and tipping point analysis to better understand what led to the decline of the ecosystem and ultimately the end of the fishing industry. Besides this, the project will take a qualitative approach to analysing the history of the Lakes, referring to historical texts and anecdotes from local people. The final aim of the project is to assess rewilding efforts at both Haweswater and Ullswater, and consider other sustainable futures for the area. As with many rewilding projects, there is much to be learnt from the past. In this case especially, we hope that gaining a better understanding of the events that led up to the ecosystem collapse can better inform future work.

I completed my MMath at the University of Sheffield, with my dissertation focusing on modelling carbon stocks in woodland ecosystems. Having the chance to use mathematics in such a way inspired me to apply for LCAB, and I look forward to further developing my skillset.
