Apply to join York Climate Commission's new Communication & Engagement Working Group
Posted on 13 May 2025
York Climate Commission is launching a new Communications & Engagement Working Group, and they’re looking for passionate volunteers to help amplify climate action across the City of York.
The roles
York Climate Commission (YCC) is currently looking for:
- A Working Group Lead – who will also sit on the Commission’s Steering Group. Ideally with some communication, marketing or engagement experience. Someone who can take on a leadership role, organise the working group well to work smart and contribute to steering group discussions.
- Working Group Members – a diverse mix of skills, experience, and energy to drive real change. We have a lot of work to do to improve our communication and engagement and need all the help we can get.
Whether you're a strategist, a digital whizz, a campaigner, a storyteller, a fundraiser, a designer, or someone who simply cares deeply about climate action in York — there’s a place for you.
The challenge
York Climate Commission need the team to:
- Raise awareness of who they are and what they do — across citizens, communities, businesses, public sector, and visitors. As well as signposting what’s already going on and how those groups can get involved.
- Shape and deliver campaigns that put climate action at the heart of York.
- Redesign and relaunch our website to reflect our revised mission and engage new and existing audiences.
- Spot funding opportunities and support fundraising for the commission to sustain engagement activities.
- Build partnerships that amplify our impact — from grassroots groups to citywide institutions.
- Support the steering group for major events and campaigns.
- Support the working groups in getting their individual messages out to the right people and support for event planning and execution.
You’ll need to think strategically but act practically. Be willing to roll your sleeves up while keeping an eye on the big picture. And most importantly, you’ll be part of a passionate, collaborative group who want to help York become a leading example of place-based climate leadership.
Who this is for
- You live in, work in, or care about the future of York.
- You want to contribute to something bigger than yourself.
- You have time to offer, skills to share, and ideas to bring.
- You’re motivated by climate action, fairness, and making a visible difference.
- You can speak up, speak out and say no when needed.
We welcome applications from people of all backgrounds, and especially encourage those underrepresented in environmental spaces to get involved.
Time commitment
- Working Group Lead: Approx. 1.5 hours for quarterly steering group meetings + 1-2 hours for regular working group meetings + time to support work happening and support the wider working group members. As much or as little as you can.
- Working Group Members: It’s as much or as little as you can. To begin with, we’d ask that you could offer up to 2hours a month and the more people join the team the less hours per person.
Much of the work will be flexible and remote, but we’re hoping to meet in person in York when possible.
How to get involved
If you’re interested in joining as a member or applying to lead the group, please email jennifer@wearefrankly.co.uk AND henrietta.stock@gmail.com with a short note about:
- Who you are
- What excites you about this opportunity

There’s no perfect profile — just a shared commitment to help York tackle the climate crisis with visibility, creativity, and boldness.
