District Heating Network extension underway

Posted on 3 July 2026

Work is underway to expand the University's district heating network, bringing low-carbon heat to more campus buildings and replacing ageing gas boilers.

If you've been on campus recently, you may have noticed some new branding around our latest energy project. Work is now underway to expand the University's district heating network as part of our geothermal project.

The project will connect the Innovation Centre, Bio Centre and IT Centre to the district heating system, replacing aging gas boilers that are more than 10 years old and nearing the end of their lifespan. In line with the University's commitment to reach net zero by 2030, new gas heating systems are no longer being installed.

Our team is laying more than 500 metres of underground pipework to deliver 2324kW of heat to these buildings, allowing the existing gas boilers to be safely decommissioned and removed.

Once complete, the new infrastructure will provide a reliable, low-carbon heat supply with an expected lifespan of at least 50 years, helping to improve the resilience of our campus energy network while supporting our sustainability ambitions.
