A new interactive exhibition exploring the future of clean energy has arrived at the University of York.
The British Geological Survey (BGS)’s “Clean Energy Beneath Our Feet” exhibition is now on display in the Biology T Block Atrium on Campus West, where it will remain from September 2026 until March 2027.
York has secured the national touring exhibition as part of its own plans to lead sustainable energy innovation, with its FutureSource geothermal energy project right here on campus.
The exhibition explores the potential of geothermal energy and how heat stored beneath our feet could contribute to a cleaner energy future. Visitors can discover how underground heat storage works, learn about the UK’s Geoenergy Observatories, and explore how renewable heat can be recovered from abandoned mines.
There are a number of interactive activities to get involved with, including handling real rock cores drilled during construction of the Glasgow Geoenergy Observatory, exploring an animated hologram showing how heat can be extracted from old mines, and testing how quickly water flows through rocks with different pore sizes.
Developed by Glasgow Science Centre, an educational charity inspiring the next generation of scientists and engineers, the exhibition offers an engaging introduction to the science behind geothermal energy.
