Our latest Human of York is Medicine student Tito.
“I’m currently in my fourth year of Medical School. Last year I was face-to-face with Covid patients, so I got to see it with my own eyes and say ‘Oh my gosh, this is crazy and this is real.’ It still doesn’t feel real, but reflecting back on it, I think it’s been a great opportunity to see and to learn through it first hand.
“I applied for the Laidlaw Scholarship in my second year. I saw it for the opportunity to do some research and just applied on a whim. It’s been a really, really good opportunity in terms of development.
“I got involved with a group called Change the Code. They’re based in Hong Kong University and trying to encourage girls to get involved in STEM. I created this virtual Medic Day in the Life.
“There’s a fake patient with fake symptoms. We come up with diagnoses and then choose investigations to take. I thought it would be a good experience for them to see the different ranges of medicine and the different aspects. It’s not just speaking to patients, but also the investigation and detective part.
“It’s been a great, great experience with great people and great scholars. I just keep on seeing little bits of what I’ve learned throughout the journey used in my day-to-day life, so it’s definitely beneficial. And I always encourage whoever’s applying to really do go for it, because it will surprise you what you come up with.
“During the summer I started my own business. I do photography on the side, I’ve always done it. But I got to use some of the leadership skills from Laidlaw and apply it to a business setting. It benefits you in all these tiny little ways here and there. And they’ll have a ripple effect in the future.
“The journey is worth it. I feel super blessed to be a Laidlaw Scholar.”
