Humans of York: Patricia

"My university life at York has been more than just leaving home. It has been enriching, challenging, nerve wrecking, transformative, and above all it has been FUN!"

"I was born in Zimbabwe and later moved to Kenya. Coming from a big family where my family survived from one pay check to another meant a lot of responsibility on my part. I created my own world midst of all this.

"My university life at York has been more than just leaving home. It has been enriching, challenging, nerve wrecking, transformative and above all it has been FUN! I've really enjoyed meeting new people, learning new things about different cultures and also sharing my cultural background.

"Studying abroad was a cultural leap for me, but the support from college tutors, my department and student services made my transition to university, new country and culture a lot easier.

"I've really enjoyed being involved with a number of societies including Enactus York, United Nations and volunteering with Oxfam. I was elected to Student Council, served as an international students officer, and I've also been privileged to receive the York Award.

"All these experiences have helped shaped the person I am today.

"I am proud of the impact I have made, those I have inspired and the great people I met along the way.

"Academically, I am forging a new path. I'm winding up my dissertation at the same time spending time evaluating my skills, values and my goals.

"I have to say a big thank you to my parents for granting me the opportunity to study at a world-class university. As the saying goes, 'Give a girl the right shoes, she can conquer the world.'

"I am confident that York has given me the right foundation and this is the beginning of even greater things to come ahead!"
