Humans of York: Liam

“I’ve been involved in University Radio York for two years now. I’ve been Head of Music and Assistant Station Manager and through this I got involved with last year’s Freshers’ Festival, where I produced the Acoustic Stage.

"From hosting world class act The Strokes to co-presenting shows on BBC Radio York, my experience of URY has been as varied as it gets.

"The station is filled with massively talented and amazing people and I’m thankful to count myself as one of the team.

"Poor mental health is something that’s had a hold on me in the past - hiding it from the people closest to me and ending up in some pretty awful states because of that.

"I’m now more open with my mental health than ever before. An important part of it was being honest with myself and accepting help when I needed it.

"I’ve tried to be open about my mental health on the radio and on social media. Despite not having a massive platform, it’s something I felt a responsibility to do and I hope my story is perhaps something that someone could relate to and maybe consider seeking some support.

"I’ve got a podcast series called ‘University and Everything in Between’ - I wanted to create a resource that I would’ve found useful when I made the first step of uni, touching on mental health, sport, flat issues and everything you’d want to know about studying at university.”
