Humans of York: Jiaming

"The moment I stepped onto the beautiful campus, I knew this was the university I wanted to study in."

"When the time came for me to make the postgraduate application, I undoubtedly put UoY at the top of my wish list. It’s a dream come true to finally be here as an international student.

"My arrival date was ten days before the official lease of my accommodation off campus started, so I did my quarantine on campus in Halifax College which I owe great gratitude for.

"The University was very supportive in many ways and offered me a free room for my quarantine period. They also provided quarantine meal packages and delivery, online shopping assistance and psychological counselling for those who need it. If you need help, you just have to ask!

"Quarantine was alright and my daily schedule was: talking to family and friends in China in the morning; checking emails, preparing for my course, getting familiar with the neighbourhood through Google maps, forums in the afternoon; then relaxing and watching a movie or TV show in the evening.

"I'm sure most of the new students like myself came to York this year at a very special time and our experience here might not be what we expected or wanted. I was nervous about the pandemic, but I had also been planning my study for a really long time and I was very determined. I'm proud to say that I've never doubted my choice of coming to study in York.

"My advice is to stay positive and patient! Be honest and follow the quarantine regulations for the sake of yourself and others.

"Check your University email account regularly for updates and learn how to ask for help or assistance. Since we are here already, we need to hope for the best and try to live to the fullest. York is a magical place and there is always more for us to experience and explore."
