Dr Mario De bruyn was born in Antwerp, Belgium. He studied Applied Biological Sciences at the University of Leuven focusing predominantly on Environmental Science and Interphase Chemistry. He gained his Ph.D. in 2004 under the supervision of Prof. P.A. Jacobs and Prof. D.E. De Vos on the heterogeneous selective reduction of
a , b-unsaturated carbonyl compounds to allylic alcohols. He was then awarded the Aron Zandman postdoctoral fellowship with Prof. R. Neumann at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel, investigating dehydrogenation reactions using polyoxometalate stabilized Pd-nanoparticles as a catalyst.
From 2007-2009 he did project work for LVMH (Christian Dior) and Merck KGaA in France, developing novel cosmetic materials using nitroxide-mediated controlled polymerization reactions. Currently he is a postdoctoral fellow at the Green Chemistry Centre of the University of York (United Kingdom). His main research topic focuses on the development of a new generation of particle and MDF boards, which solely use bio-derived materials. This research involves major industrial partners as well as leading UK-based research centres.
