Miscellaneous Facilities

The department of chemistry also houses a range of analytical equipment, which is available for access by members of the Green Chemistry lab. The department is equipped with several NMR spectrometers, including four of 500MHz field strength. They are available with a variety of accessories that make possible the observation of different nuclei, temperature variation and chromatographic separation prior to analysis.

The department has a number of mass spectrometers, which can provide high sensitivity analysis of a wide range of compounds including biopolymers and organometallics. It is possible to determine molecular masses, formulae and structure as well as components in a mixture and quantities in trace analysis. GC-MS and LC-MS are both available. Three diffractometers are available for crystallographic X-ray analysis as well as a Raman spectroscopy facility equipped with argon and krypton lasers, providing a range of wavelength for resonance Raman analysis. Raman microscopy is also possible. The Chemistry Department has a CHN analysis service and atomic absorption spectroscopy is available.

Other specialist equipment is also freely available form departments of Biology and Physics. These including, for instance, Transmission Electron Microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and a SEM with multielement detection facility and element mapping capability, highly useful in materials investigation and particularly in surface analysis.
