Steve Toms presented the winning business challenge team members with the prize cup and certificates. Lili Lu, Maura Nunes, Mary Coker-Pimpong and Ajayi Olubanke, Katherine sleightholm, Thomas Tweddle and Edward Fletcher. The week long event was supported by Market2Win who provided the competition business simulation software and expertise, in association with The York Management School.
Nine teams of York Management School students, 28 Postgraduate and Undergraduate students in all, signed up and took part recently in a new business software simulation competition. They drew upon their business knowledge to guide their team through rigorous strategic decision-making for their team (and their retail company) to lick the competition by gaining the greatest market share.
During the course of a week from 25th February to the 5th March, the teams needed to consider and weigh up information and develop and implement their preferred strategy. There were many challenges set and decision-making required along the way…
The York Management School and Market2win teamed up to find the best strategic leaders with strong strategic skills. The Market2win Simulator has been already used by corporate executives and students in universities to develop their business skills. Students here were keen to sign up. Certainly understanding market strategy is one of the most important skills of a great business leader and this game helps to develop this ability and in addition looks good on the CV also!
Gamers all received a signed certificate from Professor Malcolm McDonald (from Bradford University), a business plan template, up to 8 hours of CPD time (if in the CIM) and a much coveted unique York Young Leader Challenge mug to show off.
‘Students have needed to devote just one hour a day to the game– but more time spent on this can certainly pay off’ said Edmund Bradford of Market2win.
‘This competition has offered an opportunity to students to take part in an exciting and different way in applying their business knowledge and skills and have some fun with it too. Leadership, team working and decision-making are all very relevant and useful areas for our students to develop.’ commented Jocelyn Hayes (module leader).
