| MPhil/PhD in Railway Studies |
Applications are invited from candidates wishing to work in all the major areas of interest in the Institute of Railway Studies & Transport History. The particular research interests of staff within the IRS&TH and across the Department of History are detailed on the individual web pages of each member of staff, with outlines of the kinds of research topics they have supervised recently. If you have an enquiry about a particular research interest or area, please write and enquire through a letter or email to the Departmental Graduate Administrator in the first instance. Candidates are advised to make their proposals as specific as possible, indicating their own background in the proposed area of research, and where possible forwarding a piece of written work relevant to the proposal with their application. They should also indicate the member or members of staff with whom they wish to work.
Preliminary enquiries are also welcome and should be made to the Departmental Graduate Administrator.
The
MPhil/PhD in Railway Studies
Suitably-qualified students can study for the University of York degrees of MPhil (Master of Philosophy) and PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) in Railway Studies through the IRS&TH.
The MPhil is a research degree in its own right. Students aiming for the PhD are registered initially for an MPhil but may then apply for upgrading to PhD after one year (full-time) of study. The MPhil requires a dissertation of up to 60,000 words, to be submitted by full-time students after a period of two years' study, by part-time students after four years. The PhD requires a thesis of up to 90,000 words, to be submitted by full-time students after a period of three years' study, by part-time students after six years (with a further one year allowable for writing up in all cases).
Candidates for admission should normally have, or be expected to obtain, a good honours degree or its equivalent in an appropriate subject. The department is recognised to receive students financed by the Arts and Humanities Research Council.
Candidates are advised to contact the Departmental
Graduate Administrator in the first instance, including a research proposal
that is as detailed and as specific as possible, a description of their
own background in the proposed area of research, and where possible forwarding
a piece of written work relevant to their proposal. They should also indicate
the member or members of staff with whom they wish to work. Preliminary
enquiries are also welcome and should be made to the
Departmental
Graduate Administrator.
