The Centre for Housing Policy (CHP) at the University of York was established in 1990 with the support of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation. Professor Suzanne Fitzpatrick (Director of CHP) now leads a team of 12 research staff and three support staff. CHP’s research is supported through competitive tender, including work for government departments (including Department of Communities and Local Government (CLG), Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), Department of Health (DoH) and the Scottish Government), a wide range of voluntary sector and charitable organisations, as well as international bodies including the European Commission and United Nations Commission for Human Settlements. CHP also undertakes in-depth policy related academic research, supported by staff making unsolicited applications to research funding organisations such as the Economic and Social Research Council. In size, financial strength and reputation, CHP is now one of the leading housing research centres in Europe. CHP’s work is grouped into eight themes:

CHP is also the home of the peer-reviewed academic journal European Journal of Housing Policy, which is edited by Suzanne Fitzpatrick. The journal is relaunching in 2010 as the International Journal of Housing Policy.
