HOW TO APPLY

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Applicants should have some prior academic study or some practical experience of law. Prior academic study includes any coursework in law (including that done for legal practice or law conversion courses). Practical experience includes both paid and volunteer work.

If you have any questions about this requirement, please contact cahr@york.ac.uk.

Applicants will normally be expected to have obtained a first degree with an upper class honours (or international equivalent).

English Language Requirements

For the LLM we require a minimum overall IELTS of 6.5, 92 TOEFL iBT, Cambridge Proficiency A, B or C or GCSE/IGCSE A, B, C.

Also note from 21 April 2011, the UK Border Agency (UKBA) introduced changes to the Tier 4 student visa route. Full details about these changes are available on the UKBA website at: http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/sitecontent/newsarticles/2011/april/28-student-visas

UKBA now require applicants intending to study at degree level and above to have achieved level B2 in each of the four language components.

For example, this equates to the following:

IELTS

Listening – 5.5

Speaking – 5.5

Reading – 5.5

Writing – 5.5

TOEFL

Listening – 21

Speaking – 22

Reading – 23

Writing – 21

LLM FEES

The full-time fees for the LLM in 2011/12 were:

Home and EU students: £4,200
Overseas students: £12,000

Please note postgraduate degrees will not be increasing in line with undergraduate degrees. The above costs are likely to increase by inflation only for 2012/13 entry.
