Centre for Applied Human Rights

The Centre for Applied Human Rights draws on the University of York's rich tradition of engaged scholarship in development, post-war reconstruction, public policy, public health, disability rights, gender and women's rights, environmental issues and refugee law. The Centre is both genuinely interdisciplinary and committed to practice. Its core activities are as follows:

  • hosting human rights defenders at risk, who complete training and educational programmes and contribute to the activities of the Centre. A focus on human rights defending and defenders shapes all the Centre’s work
  • the MA in Applied Human Rights was launched in October 2008
  • the LLM in International Human Rights Law and Practice started in October 2010
  • research strands generate collaborations across disciplines and between academics and practitioners in the following fields: human rights defenders; human rights and development; transitional justice; health and human rights; and refugee law. PhD applications are invited in these and other related fields.
  • the Journal of Human Rights Practice (Oxford University Press) is based at the Centre.
