Research Facilities

The research facilities within the Department include six high-field NMR spectrometers, which are housed in a brand new purpose-built £3.5 million annex to the Department, coupled with modern X-ray diffractometers and mass spectrometers.

There is also a considerable research effort concentrated around the use of lasers in Chemistry.

The Department has its own glass, electronic and mechanical workshops.

In addition, York Structural Biology Laboratory is the Department's dedicated biochemical facility. It maintains one of the best-equipped suites of molecular graphics and computing facilities in Europe.

Our new £9 million dedicated research wing consists of:

  • purpose-built mass spectrometry and NMR laboratories
  • modern organic research laboratories containing fifty-four fume cupboards
  • a laser laboratory
  • I.T. data-processing areas

Recently, the Department has been awarded a grant of £1.6 million for a new Centre of Excellence for Mass Spectrometry, the centrepiece of which is an FT-ICR mass spectrometer.

Our researchers also have access to the specialised facilities in the York JEOL Nanocentre (opened in April 2007), which includes the centre's flagship £5.5 million electron microscope.
