Teaching Studentships for UK/EU Applicants

The Department of Chemistry is offering the opportunity for PhD students to develop the teaching skills necessary for a career in academia or teaching, alongside the research skills all PhD students develop during their studies.  Teaching Studentships will begin in October 2012.

The deadline for the first round of competitively funded places has now passed.  Interviews with research supervisorswill take place by Wednesday 15 February and interviews to assess your teaching abilities will take place on Wednesday 22 February.  If funded places are still to be awarded, a second round will take place in March or April 2012.  More details to follow in due course.

To apply for a Teaching Studentship in Chemistry:

  • Select a PhD project approved to be considered for a Teaching Studentship
  • Submit an online PhD Application Form, including a CV, personal statement and the names of two suitable referees.  Include the name(s) of the supervisor(s) you are interested in working with.  In the Funding section, state that you intend to apply for a Teaching Studentship.
  • Submit a Teaching Studentship Application Form to chemgrad@york.ac.uk by the deadline.
  • You may then be invited to interview by the supervisor(s) you hope to complete your research with, and an independent member of academic staff
  • If your proposed supervisor, wishes to support your application, they will submit a Nomination Form to the Graduate Awards Panel by 15 February.
  • You will then be contacted by the Chemistry Graduate Office to arrange an interview with you via SkypeTM with the Chair of the Board of Studies and another member of academic staff to assess your teaching abilities. 
  • The Graduate Awards Panel will meet on to award studentships.
  • You and your prospective supervisor will be informed of the outcome of the Panel meeting, and if you are successful, the Department will request that the University makes you an offer of a PhD position to start in October 2012.
