Message from the Academic Programme Manager
CELT has a number of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) programmes aimed at students needing to improve their English prior to commencing degree programmes.
In addition, we also offer courses for current York students along with general English courses for the public.

These programmes include specific courses for Management students, students entering MATESOL and a general pre-sessional programme.
Our four-week pre-sessionals are for students with unconditional offers who want to adapt early to York and UK culture. We also offer short, stand alone programmes in English Language and Management and English for International Communication for students not intending to continue at York.
A one-year Pre-Masters programme is available for students considering post-graduate study in a number of departments at York.
Our Open Access and Departmental English programmes are mainly free to university students. Open Access includes options for academic and general English, including everyday speaking, pronunciation, academic writing, academic speaking and academic vocabulary.
Departmental English now operates in ten departments, using different models to support students in their programmes of study.
York Award credits are now available for these courses.
CELT classes for the popular Cambridge Examination suite are open to university students and the public. These are ideal for general English proficiency development but they also prepare students for examinations in York or in their home countries.

Your department may have arranged for CELT to deliver specialist courses and workshops for you. Provisional arrangements have been made to run courses for the following departments:

Check with your department office for details.
It is easy to underestimate the workload that you will have in your department, so we recommend that students take only one CELT course per term. If you wish to take more than one course per term, you should discuss this with the Senior Tutor responsible for the programme.
There is no formal assessment on Open Access courses, but your tutor will give you occasional tasks to do, in order to assess your progress. On some courses, you will be given a final written report on your performance in these tasks.
To get the benefit of our courses, you need to attend as many classes as possible. If you know that you will be absent and have a legitimate reason, you must inform the tutor in advance of the class. It is at their discretion to decide whether to agree such an absence.
