Aims

  • To examine the evidence for the coastal factor in the major episodes of expansion in the human habitat during prehistory
  • To consider the range of information that can be obtained from coastal archaeological deposits and their wider significance as sources of evidence about coastal palaeoeconomy, palaeoecology and cultural use of coastal landscapes

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this module students should have acquired:

  • Knowledge of the role of coastal environments and marine resources in facilitating human settlement and colonisation processes across a range of case studies from different parts of the world
  • Understanding of the factors that contribute to midden formation and the differential visibility of archaeological deposits in coastal contexts
  • Ability to critically assess the type of information that can be obtained from coastal archaeological deposits and their contribution to an understanding of wider social, cultural and economic processes
  • Development of transferable skills in small group work and oral presentations
