Aims

  • to introduce the range of ideas and methods associated with the study of coastal landscapes
  • to develop understanding of key themes and research questions relevant to coastal prehistory
  • to develop research, analytical and presentational skills

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this module students should:

  • understand the all-pervasive impact of sea-level change and related processes on the interpretation of coastal archaeology in a range of geographically diverse examples
  • be aware of the range of evidence recovered from submerged land surfaces and underwater archaeological sites and the methods available for their investigation
  • understand ideas about seascapes and early seafaring
  • be able to evaluate critically archaeological patterns of evidence in the light of dynamically changing coastal settings and their impact on world prehistory
  • have developed skills in essay writing, seminar presentation and small group work
