What is a York Futures Scholarship?

In today's highly competitive employment market, a good degree from a top university isn't always enough to secure that all-important graduate position.

Financial barriers can make it particularly difficult for students from lower-income backgrounds to gain relevant work experience and skills.

By giving to the York Futures Scholarship programme, you can make a difference to talented undergraduate students who would otherwise struggle.

You can help today

Right now, we can only support 37% of those students who apply for financial support. With your help we can support more students than ever before.

Support a student

How your donations will help

There are four levels of funding available to students based on their individual needs and the nature of their plans, allowing you to support a student through various activities during their university life, helping them to prepare for their future.

A donation today will help provide students at York with a York Futures Scholarship totalling:

£250

These awards will be supporting a student in their career development, travelling to interviews or being able to accept unpaid work.

£1000

These awards will support a student who has been offered a career development opportunity, helping them with travel and living costs.

£2000 - £5000

These awards will support a student looking to accept an international internship or work at an overseas summer school.

£6000

These awards can support a student who has secured a year long placement either at home or abroad.

Having that extra money helps so much because I didn't have to worry about how am I going to afford going to all these events so I can try to network and try to get a job. And at the same time I can focus more on things like my degree.

Supporting students

By giving to the York Futures Scholarship programme, you can make a difference to talented undergraduate students who would otherwise struggle.

Financial barriers can make it particularly difficult for students from lower-income backgrounds to gain relevant work experience and skills.

Your support gives students the chance to seize career and volunteering opportunities by bridging the gap between student loans and the cost of living.

To be eligible for a York Futures Scholarship, students must:

  • Be seeking to develop skills through involvement in the University, wider community, internships or work experience.
  • Clearly demonstrate how the funding could support access to career-related activity which would otherwise be unattainable, as well as how completing the opportunity/opportunities will support their personal and/or professional development.

Funding is prioritised for students who demonstrate financial need and are from widening participation backgrounds.

  • Consider themselves to have a disability

Your support will provide:

  • More freedom for our brightest students from lower-income families to develop their potential
  • A springboard to a fulfilling career that will benefit the students and those they share their knowledge with too.
