Undergraduate English language requirements

If you’re a non-native English-speaking applicant, you must show enough fluency in written and spoken English to study with us.

We accept a range of qualification types, depending on your course:

  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) (Academic and Online)
  • IELTS One Skill Retake
  • GCSE/IGCSE/O level English Language (as a first or second language)
  • PTE Academic (excluding PTE Academic online)
  • TOEFL IBT (internet based and special home edition) (TOEFL MyBest score is not acceptable for meeting the English language requirement)
  • Trinity ISE
  • Cambridge B2 First
  • Cambridge C1 Advanced
  • Duolingo (except for Hull York Medical School courses)
  • LanguageCert SELT
  • LanguageCert Academic (Test Centre or Online tests accepted)
  • Kaplan Test of English (KTE)
  • Skills For English
  • Oxford Test of English Advanced
  • Oxford ELLT

You can’t combine scores from more than one qualification attempt, or from multiple qualification types.

Your test result must be dated no more than two years before the start of your course.

School-leaving certificates

We also accept various school-leaving certificates, if you meet the required grade in an English language subject.

Accepted certificates include the International Baccalaureate Diploma and European Baccalaureate, as well as other country specific qualifications.

Exceptions

You don’t need to provide evidence of your English language if any of the following apply:

  • You're a UK national
  • You're a national from a majority-English-speaking country, as specified by the UKVI
  • You've completed a degree in the UK, or in a majority-English-speaking country
  • You've completed a degree within two years of your course’s start date, which has been taught in English – you’ll need to provide official confirmation from the institution that the degree was taught in English
  • You've completed or are completing A levels (or other acceptable Level 3 qualification) within the UK over a two-year period
