If you need to take a break in your studies, you can request a Leave of Absence.

The information below only applies to students studying 100% online on a York Online programme.

If you are studying on another programme, please go to
Take a break from your studies for more information about applying for a Leave of Absence.

Taking a break from your studies

The York Online Registration, Absence and Engagement policy allows you to plan your studies around other commitments, and to respond quickly if your circumstances change. Any York Online student can use this to take an authorised break in their studies, known as a ‘Leave of Absence’.

You can request to take a break at two different points in your studies:

  • If you know that you don’t want to register for your next module, then you can request a planned break in your studies up to eight weeks before the module begins.
  • If you are registered on a module but are unable to study, you can usually request to take an immediate break, part way through your current module.

If you think you need to take a break in your studies, read the following information and speak to your Student Success Coordinator to see if a Leave of Absence is the best option for you.

Taking a Leave of Absence of any length will extend your programme end date. This means it will take longer for you to complete your studies.

Student status and your responsibilities

When you take a break from your studies, your student status changes. This can have important implications for what we expect of you during your Leave of Absence, as well as for any funding you receive. Make sure you understand what actions you are expected to take during your Leave of Absence before you submit a break request.

Returning to your studies

You will receive an email regarding your return to study before your Leave of Absence is due to end. This will explain what steps you need to take before you can be resumed to continue your programme of study. It will also remind you of any conditions of return that you need to fulfil before you will be permitted to return from your Leave of Absence. If you are not ready to return to your studies, you can submit a new break request in order to extend your Leave of Absence.
