Changing and taxing vehicles

Please inform insurance-enquiries@york.ac.uk at least seven days in advance if you intend to acquire or dispose of a leased or University-owned vehicle, so that our insurance policy and the Motor Insurance Database (MID) can be updated.

The MID requires logging all vehicle details with insurers onto a national database within seven days of acquiring a vehicle and notifying subsequent changes. Failure to comply with the requirements of the MID may result in prosecution and resultant penalties (currently a fine of up to £5,000).

Acquisition: If a vehicle is acquired (owned), the V5C registration certificate should be forwarded to the Insurance Office once it arrives from the DVLA.

Disposal: The relevant section of the V5C registration certificate must be completed, signed and returned to the DVLA as soon as the vehicle has been disposed of. The University will continue to be responsible for the vehicle until the DVLA is informed.

Road Tax (University-owned vehicles): The Insurance Office will tax University-owned vehicles on behalf of the department.
