Policies on assessment, marking, feedback and standards

These pages provide information about the University’s policies and procedures on assessment, marking, feedback and standards for taught awards (including integrated taught awards for PGR programmes, unless stated otherwise on individual documents).

Policies on these webpages are categorised under the headings below, and accompanied by relevant procedure, guidance and templates. Policies specific to the research components of PGR programmes can be found in the Policy on Research Degrees.

A combined document of all policies related to assessment, marking, feedback and standards, and a glossary of key terms and acronyms is also available.

Any revisions or in-year changes will be published here and schools/departments will be notified. We advise you not to download or print copies of the documents: if you do so, ensure that you regularly check the online version for any updates.

Assessment and feedback at York

This section includes the policy detailing assessment types and formats at York, as well as links to the programme design policies.

2. Setting, scheduling and conducting assessments

This section includes policies related to the setting, scheduling and delivery of assessments; and specific policies for the assessment of students studying abroad, visiting students and work based learning.

3. Support for students during assessment

This section provides information about student responsibilities in assessment and includes policies related to exceptional circumstances and reasonable adjustments.

4. Marking and feedback

This section includes policies on who can mark student work, marking for specific assessment formats, providing feedback on assessments and when penalties must be applied.

5. Academic integrity and misconduct

This section contains policies related to academic integrity and academic misconduct.

6. Governance and award rules

This section includes the progression and award rules; and policies related to external examiners, Boards of Examiners and Collaborative Provision.
