The Centre for Women's Studies in the Department of Sociology is pleased to offer a PhD studentship which covers the three-year period of the PhD in Women’s and Gender Studies. However, years 2-3 of the studentship will be conditional on successful completion of the 1st year.
The studentship covers the UK Home fees for the full three years (starting with £5,181* in 2026/27). The fee rates for 2027/28 and 2028/29 are pending confirmation.
The studentship does not include the fee differential between the Home rate and the International rate.
The studentship does not cover the continuation fee for the (4th) Writing Up year (2029/30), if this is required.
*The 2026/27 fee is confirmed, the fee for the following years is pending confirmation.

Eligibility
Open to students from PhD in Women's and Gender Studies only.
This Studentship is funded by the GEMMA Consortium and only students who have previously completed the Postgraduate Taught GEMMA Programme, are eligible to apply.
- EU, International (non-EU) and UK (home) students, who previously completed a Postgraduate Taught MA in the Erasmus Mundus GEMMA Programme.
- Eligibility includes students who completed their taught MA in a GEMMA programme at both current and previous consortium universities, which includes University of Granada, Spain; University of Bologna, Italy; University of York, United Kingdom; University of Hull, United Kingdom; University of Lodz, Poland; University of Oviedo, Spain; University of Utrecht, the Netherlands; Central European University, Austria and/or Hungary.
- We will only consider candidates who already have an offer for a PhD in Women's and Gender Studies for September 2026, or whose applications have been reviewed and deemed likely to merit an offer. Thus, you should submit your PhD application well in advance of the studentship deadline.

How we allocate
The Department will review all applications after the submission deadline, to allocate the award. The award is allocated on the basis of academic merit, taking into account the quality of the research proposal, past academic transcripts, and references.
