Job title:
Postgraduates Who Teach (PGWT) are required for the following first year
Sociology modules running in the Autumn term 2013:
- Cultivating a Sociological Imagination. Module coordinator: Daryl Martin (daryl.martin@york.ac.uk)
- Introduction to Social Theory. Module coordinator: Nik Brown (nik.brown@york.ac.uk)
- The Sociology of Crime and Deviance. Module coordinator: Ruth Penfold-Mounce (ruth.penfoldmounce@york.ac.uk)
- Introducing Social Psychology. Module coordinator: Clare Jackson (clare.jackson@york.ac.uk)
Duration of job
To start teaching week commencing 7th October 2013 until week commencing 25th November 2013, plus marking associated coursework (submitted by students on 4th December 2013) to be completed and returned to module convenors no later than 16th December 2013. PGWT may also be required to attend department meetings, which may include module-specific briefings and in-house training sessions.
Main Purpose of the role:
To contribute to undergraduate student learning, to undertake teaching activities and associated marking, this includes developing seminar programmes, and providing appropriate guidance and feedback as required.
Key responsibilities/ activities
- Use existing teaching materials or modify teaching materials to enhance existing session plans within a clear and established programme
- Teach and facilitate student learning
- Monitor performance and give feedback and guidance on student work
- Help students to make sense of their learning within the context of the module and programme
- Attend meetings relating to student programmes on which they teach
- Attend associated teaching, where appropriate
- Act as a catalyst for further development or learning
Training
All PGWT employed to undertake paid teaching must have completed the mandatory training outlined in the University Policy for PGWT or be booked in to take it in October 2013: http://www.york.ac.uk/admin/hr/resources/policy/postgraduates-who-teach.htm#1
As a minimum, all PGWT must have completed either the ‘Introduction to Learning and Teaching’ course or the PGWT Residential provided by the Researcher Development Team (RDT). For further information on the mandatory training:http://www.york.ac.uk/admin/hr/researcher-development/pgwt/
In addition to the above, PGWT may be required to undertake department-and subject-specific training. Note that all training is obligatory, and that time spent undertaking training does not count towards the contact hours.

Pay
£21.24 per hour (Comprehensive Hourly Rate Level 1) for seminar teaching

Please note, we cannot guarantee that all sessions allocated will take place on the same day of the week, we have to fit in with the timetable.
