University Award

Sociology Research Fellow, Kimberly Jamie, received an award for her work on the University's Preparing Future Academics programme on Friday 14th December. This programme is a teaching training and development scheme for doctoral students who want to go on to academic positions. It comprises a number of elements such as peer-to-peer observation of teaching, taking part in a number of workshops, giving a paper at a symposium event held at York and producing a portfolio of reflections and evidence about personal teaching practice. It was for her portfolio that Kim won her 'outstanding' award which was presented by Professor John Robinson, the University's pro-vice chancellor for teaching and learning.
Kim is one of a number of Sociology doctoral students past and present who have participated in the Preparing Future Academics programme which is a reflection of our committment to producing and providing an engaging and high quality university teaching experience for our undergraduates.
Preparing Future Academics (PFA) is an accredited introductory programme for researchers who intend to pursue an academic career in higher education. It provides researchers who teach with skills in facilitating learning, teaching techniques and the opportunity to learn from the experience of new academics.
Full-time registration is from October to September. This is made up of:
- six months of formal study including teaching and attendance at workshops
- a three month period in which to compile a portfolio of evidence
- a three month feedback and review phase
All participants are assigned a PFA supervisor who provides guidance on teaching and supporting student learning.
