Call for papers opens for major conference on northern dialects at the historic Guildhall.

The Department of Language and Linguistic Science is delighted to announce that it will host the 11th Northern Englishes Workshop (NEW11). The event is scheduled for 9–10 September 2026 and will take place at the Guildhall, a stunning 15th-century building in the heart of York city centre.

Organised by George Bailey, Claire Childs, E Jamieson, and Carmen Llamas, the workshop focuses on dialects of English associated with the linguistic ‘north’ of the UK. The department invites abstract submissions on any aspect of linguistic research concerning these varieties, including sociolinguistic, dialectological, and historical perspectives.

The workshop adopts a broad definition of ‘Northern Englishes’, welcoming research on varieties from the North of England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. Work exploring varieties shaped through contact with Northern Englishes is also encouraged.

"We welcome abstracts about ongoing work and research in its early stages as well as more developed research," said the organising committee.

The deadline for abstract submission is 27 March 2026.
