The Politics of Proof: how ‘evidence cultures’ shape environmental policymaking in the Global South
Alan Maynard Auditorium (ARC/014), Alcuin Research Resource Centre, Campus West, University of York (Map)
Event details
Policymaking is more than just balancing stakeholder interests. It also involves the complexities of navigating the politics of evidence. The use of evidence is never neutral, but rather a fundamentally social process where different actors bring their own perspectives on what constitutes "good" data and their own willingness to be challenged.
At this event, organized by the Interdisciplinary Global Development Centre (IGDC), we explore findings from two York-led research projects funded by the British Academy that examine social and normative processes shaping the use of evidence in environmental policymaking in the Global South.
Visiting teams from Mahidol University (Thailand) will discuss their research on evidence cultures in coastal policymaking in Krabi province, while a team from the University of São Paulo (Brazil) will explore the politics of evidence within urban climate adaptation policies in the city and state of São Paulo.
