Catriona Kennedy shed light on the destructive Gordon Riots in a Radio 4 interview.

Catriona Kennedy, Senior Lecturer in Modern British and Irish History, appeared on Radio 4’s In Our Time on 2 May 2019 to discuss The Gordon Riots of 1780, the most destructive riots in London’s history.

The riots were sparked by the presentation of a petition to parliament by Lord George Gordon, opposing the relaxation of penal laws against Catholics. They reached their peak on 7 June 1780 ‘Black Wednesday’ as the rioters stormed Newgate prison and attacked the Bank of England.
