4-volume 'Cambridge History of Ireland' launch

Posted on 11 May 2018

Congratulations to Professor Jane Hawkes!

Launch of the 4-volume Cambridge History of Ireland, featuring a chapter on the Art and Society of early medieval Ireland (600-1200) by our own Professor Jane Hawkes, took place on Monday 30th April at Dublin Castle with an address by the President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins. Himself an historian before embarking on more overtly political ventures, the President used the opportunity to stress the importance of history and the humanities, noting that these are "intrinsic to our shared citizenship; to be without such knowledge is to be permanently burdened with a lack of perspective, empathy and wisdom". He went on to state that to be without training "in the careful and necessary capability to filter and critically interpret a variety of sources" which is inherent to study of history and the humanities, "is to leave citizens desperately ill-equipped to confront a world in which information is increasingly disseminated without historical perspective or even regard for the truth". Observations to bear in mind when teaching and studying the History of Art.
