The grant will allow Michael to develop his research on 'Photomontage, Exile and Memory: Recovering Dada after 1945'. Photomontage is considered a key twentieth-century avant-garde practice. The grant will also enable him to analyse the little-researched late photomontages of the four German artists considered the pioneers of avant-garde photomontage in the early twentieth century, George Grosz, Raoul Hausmann, John Heartfield and Hannah Hoech, who all returned to the medium in later life, having experienced both the suppression of artistic expression under Nazism and periods of exile.
Many congratulations to Michael!
