History of Art Students Contribute to Celebratory Installation at York Art Gallery

Posted on 5 March 2015

Artist Clare Twomey came to campus this week to make pots for the installation commissioned by York Art Gallery to mark its opening this summer.

The installation of 10,000 pots will also celebrate the opening of CoCA, the Centre of Ceramic Art at York Art Gallery.  The number 10,000 relates to the number of hours of practice believed to be required before someone can be considered a master craftsman, and the challenge of displaying this number of delicate objects alludes to the problem of growing collections and how to look after them.

Clare has been to different locations to engage members of the public in the creation of this artwork, and this week she came to the art studios at the University.  A camera crew came from Look North to cover the story, which featured History of Art students hard at work!

Clare also gave a lunchtime talk with ceramics curator Helen Walsh while she was here.
